Morocco Visa for Bhutanese Citizens: Are You Eligible?

Most Bhutanese travellers will fall outside the eVisa route

A Bhutanese passport does not qualify by itself, and the condition it depends on is one most Bhutanese travellers will not meet. Eligibility rests on a foreign visa or residence permit — uncommon among Bhutanese passport holders — so for most the consular route is the realistic one.

Bhutan keeps formal relations with only about sixty countries, and barely a handful in Africa; Morocco, tied to Thimphu since 2011, is one of them. Fittingly, the Bhutanese most likely to qualify today are the students who have built the world's largest Bhutanese community in Australia.

Which documents make you eligible

Eligibility rests on a second document you already hold. Morocco accepts two kinds, and they are not interchangeable — one is a visa, the other a residence permit:

An accepted multiple-entry sticker visa. A valid multiple-entry visa issued by the Schengen Area, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan or Ireland. It must remain valid for at least 90 days from your arrival in Morocco. A single-entry visa does not qualify.

An accepted residence permit. A valid residence permit issued by any European Union country, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Norway, Switzerland or the United Arab Emirates. It must remain valid for at least 180 days from your arrival.

The document must be genuine, currently valid and in your own name. Because these conditions decide the whole trip, confirm yours with the eligibility check before you rely on it.

Who this actually applies to

Relatively few Bhutanese passport holders carry a foreign visa or residence permit, so for most travellers the eVisa route will not be open and the consular path is the realistic one. Where it does apply is to Bhutanese studying or working abroad — in the EU, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia or Japan — who hold a residence permit there, or to anyone holding a multiple-entry visa from one of the accepted countries.

If you hold none of these documents

Then the eVisa is not available, and Morocco is entered on a consular visa obtained from the Moroccan mission responsible for Bhutan.
