Morocco Visa for South African Citizens: Are You Eligible?

A strong South African passport still is not enough here

A South African passport does not qualify by itself, and its wide visa-free reach elsewhere does not help: Morocco's condition is not about passport strength but about holding an accepted visa or residence permit.

There is a direct thread to South African history: in 1962 Nelson Mandela received his first military training at a camp in Oujda, in eastern Morocco, before returning home to lead the armed struggle. The ties predate the visa rules by two generations.

Which documents make you eligible

Eligibility rests on a second document you already hold. Morocco accepts two kinds, and they are not interchangeable — one is a visa, the other a residence permit:

An accepted multiple-entry sticker visa. A valid multiple-entry visa issued by the Schengen Area, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan or Ireland. It must remain valid for at least 90 days from your arrival in Morocco. A single-entry visa does not qualify.

An accepted residence permit. A valid residence permit issued by any European Union country, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Norway, Switzerland or the United Arab Emirates. It must remain valid for at least 180 days from your arrival.

The document must be genuine, currently valid and in your own name. Because these conditions decide the whole trip, confirm yours with the eligibility check before you rely on it.

Where South African applicants usually qualify

South Africans often hold United Kingdom visas or residence permits, reflecting long-standing ties, along with Schengen visas issued for business or study. Any of these opens the eVisa route. The South African passport's wide visa-free access elsewhere does not help here, though: Morocco's condition is about holding an accepted visa or permit, not about general passport strength.

If you hold none of these documents

Then the eVisa is not available, and you would apply for a consular visa at the Moroccan mission responsible for South Africa.
